Details

This month's issue of New Internationalist explores the Saudi regime - a champion human rights violator; provider of much of the world’s oil and home to a booming market for arms trading nations. It may also supply the ideology that fuels Al Qaeda and ISIS.

Saudi Arabia just got worse. It’s executing and flogging more of its citizens and locking up even moderate critics of its autocratic regime. It’s bombing schools and hospitals in neighbouring Yemen and violating international law.

Profiting from this are its traditional western allies – countries like Britain, Canada, the US – who sell billions worth of weapons to a state that Amnesty International rates as one of the world’s top human rights abusers.

Saudi Arabia’s proxy war with Iran is also causing chaos in the region that is spilling out into the world. Isn’t it time for western governments to stop the profiteering and develop a few principles – for all our sakes.
