1. Medjoul Dates Medjoul Dates

    Starting at: £4.95

    Medjoul Dates

The ‘Medjoul’ is the finest of dates. It is grown in the Jericho area which has the perfect climate for producing these delicious, soft and succulent dates. They are sourced through the ‘Palm Farmers Cooperative’ and are a vital source of income in this area.

Dates are one of the oldest tree crops cultivated by man. More than 5000 years ago this valuable tree helped sustain the desert and nomadic peoples of the Middle East and North Africa.

Medjoul dates have been called the “king of dates” and the “crown jewel of dates.” Like most dates, the fruit is dried prior to being eaten. What really makes these dried wonders so special is that they are exceptionally large, contain a large amount of “fruit meat,” and are extremely sweet. Each center of the date has an elongated pit, which is easy to remove. Despite its sweetness, a couple of medjool dates only contain about 90 calories. They’re a good source of fiber and contain high levels of potassium, magnesium, copper and manganese. They do have a significant amount of fruit sugar, but this can make them a perfect alternative to other forms of dessert.

The “Medjoul” variety is produced in Jericho and the Jordan Valley in Palestine, and in some other places like California, USA.

Medjoul dates are usually eaten fresh as a desert after lunch or dinner. They are also used as an ingredient of different kinds of sweets and in packing as a paste.

Like us, you probably want more equity, more sustainability, and more quality at affordable prices. That’s why we have teamed up with gebana - who enable small scale organic farmers from the South to sell their produce in Western Europe -  to change the rules of the game: they trade differently, you buy differently. This is how we all make it work:

    • gebana only harvest and deliver fruit when it is ripe.
    • The taste is what counts above all; meaningless standards such as size and colour are of no concern.
    • gebana sell in large packages that come directly from the country of origin. This is more efficient, reducing not only waste but also food miles.
    • You, the customer, buy in larger quantities. By receiving large packages directly from the producers you are helping to reduce the carbon footprint of your purchase, with shorter transport routes, lower emissions and less packaging. And you can always share the contents of bulk packages with friends and family.
    • We continue to strive to keep getting better at doing business socially and ecologically and change global trade in favour or farming families, local economies and the environment – it doesn’t stop at organic and fair trade!
    • No preservatives, no wastage, and incredible taste – you won’t look back!

    Reviews:

18 Dec-19 Oranges arrived this morning. All good. Such flavour !! Puts Sainsbury’s to shame. Why can’t we buy oranges like this locally? Regards David and Sylvia PS We use the organic peel in currant buns. Delicious.

18 Dec-19 66 large oranges all in good condition, taste lovely, zest well as well as have a good firm skin, enclosed was a bonus lemon as well. Works out at £.70 an orange, with near enough 5 oranges to a kilo. Might be worth emailing all purchasers to remind them they can use the zest in cooking etc, seems a dreadful waste otherwise. My girlfriend is going to use them in her chocolate making, so they turned up just in time! Thanks for sorting this. Cheers Tom & Kate

3 Feb-19 Just wanted to say that these oranges were delicious, and we will be ordering again!

29 Jan-19 The oranges arrived when you said and they are big, juicy and delicious - much nicer and better value than supermarket ones. They are in good condition, the cardboard crate they came in is ventilated and robust, so far they are keeping well in it.

17 Dec-18 Five stars. These are reliably juicy, sweet and delicious — every single one so far — with a firm, easy to peel skin. Almost two weeks in we're half way through and there's not a sign of blemish on any of them, despite our courier being quite rough with the box and our coldest room, at 13C, being above the recommended storage temperature. 13kg of oranges (just over sixty individual fruit) may seem a bit crazy, but the two of us will easily eat them all within their month-long "best before". The price is not far off supermarket organics, so seems to represent very good value for such a short and ethical supply chain.

9 Dec-18 My oranges are delicious and all in great condition, a real pleasure eating them.

5 Dec-18 The best oranges I have ever had!

5 Dec-18 Thanks very much; just arrived and taste delicious!
