Overview

Quick Overview

Soft, creamy, mild-tasting, broken organic cashew nuts (unsalted). Great as a healthy energy snack or added to cereal and pastries, in sauces or lightly roasted over salads and exotic dishes. With the very elaborate cracking of cashews, individual nuts break down again and again. Often these broken cashews are wasted but not here! No preservatives, no wastage and incredible taste – you won’t look back! Harvested in Burkina Faso or Benin. The Ethical Shop has partnered up with gebana to change global trade in favour of farming families, local economies and the environment. gebana is a self-styled global farmers' market, enabling small scale organic farmers from the South to sell their produce in Western Europe.

About the farmers: Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. Today gebana works with 3,250 small farmers in Burkina Faso and provide employment for several hundred people in the processing industry. The organic premium, advance payment and guaranteed purchase, along with cutting out the middleman, are crucial to these producers.

‘Chaos reigns in the market, but gebana is well organized. The prices are fixed, we are paid per kilogram and the produce is weighed correctly. We also get training, for example how to cut down trees, which is helpful to us,’ says Lamine Bruno Coulibaly about working with gebana.

Storage: Store in an air-tight container to keep the nuts fresh.

About Ethical Shop and gebana: Global Farmers' Market is a new partnership between New Internationalist's Ethical Shop and gebana to supply organic produce direct from farmers in poor countries. gebana was founded in Switzerland in 1998 with the aim of linking social and ecological values to economic sustainability. They established supply chains and partner companies were formed in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Togo and Benin to make it easier for them to link to local farmers. They enable small scale organic farmers from the South to sell their produce in Western Europe. It hasn’t been an easy ride and one of the ways that has made gebana distinctive has been its willingness to take risks. gebana has high standards for social justice and sustainability. It works with external accreditation but recognises that whilst clear and strict standards are important, their implementation is often laborious, bureaucratic and expensive. They have developed their own organic and fairtrade standards whilst recognising the needs and disadvantages of small-scale farmers.

Until now gebana has only operated in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, but recently New Internationalist's Ethical Shop was introduced to them by Helvetas who have been our Swiss partner in the One World Calendar project for over 35 years. gebana need to expand their marketing as most of their organic farmers produce more than they can sell. They share many of the New Internationalist and Ethical Shop's core aims, fostering sustainable development across the world whilst protecting the environment for future generations. Their produce is organically farmed and then shipped via land or sea to limit carbon emissions.
